BE

‘Be’ is an experiment with music and stills I did last year with an assignment on Sufism and its devotional aspects.

I’ve tried to potray some of the states of being that a Sufi goes through using symbols and bring about a progression from matter to higher levels of truth and abstraction.Symbolism is at play here , with the use of colour, of popular tropes such as the moth and the flame, of mineral and plant matter, of architectural elements like the jaali(to stress the contrast of light and dark), and the arch to suggest progression or ascent, the niche and the simurgh which is a bird that suggests the attainment of a spiritual tryst.

Music is a Daf solo by Peyman Nassehpour. The video opens with a line from The Holy Quran.
